Fine Art Printing Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about metal and canvas prints, artwork files, finishes, mounting, and ordering.
Metal Prints
What is a metal print?
A metal print is an image permanently infused into a specially coated aluminum panel using a process called dye-sublimation. Unlike paper prints behind glass, the image becomes part of the metal surface itself — producing vibrant color, crisp detail, and a sleek modern presentation. For a deeper explanation, see our Complete Guide to Metal Prints.
How are metal prints made?
Metal prints are created through dye-sublimation. The image is first printed onto transfer paper with sublimation inks, then transferred into the coated aluminum panel using heat and pressure. The dyes turn into gas and bond permanently with the coating, producing a smooth, vibrant, and highly durable result. Learn more in our Complete Guide to Metal Prints.
What is dye-sublimation printing?
Dye-sublimation is a printing process where heat converts special inks into gas that bonds with a coated surface. This creates an image that is infused into the material rather than sitting on top of it. The result is a print with exceptional durability, color vibrancy, and resistance to fading, scratching, and moisture.
What makes Chromaluxe metal prints different?
Chromaluxe is widely recognized as the industry standard for premium dye-sublimation metal prints. Chromaluxe panels offer beautiful high-resolution results, excellent batch-to-batch consistency, premium surface quality, and strong professional presentation trusted by galleries worldwide. At Pure Art Printer, we trust Chromaluxe panels for their reliability and quality. Read more in our Complete Guide to Metal Prints.
Are metal prints better than canvas?
It depends on the look you want. Metal prints offer sharper detail, bolder color, and a sleek modern presentation. Canvas prints provide a softer, traditional gallery feel with visible texture. Both are excellent choices — it comes down to the aesthetic you prefer and the style of artwork being displayed.
Are metal prints durable?
Yes. Metal prints are one of the most durable print formats available. Because the image is infused into the coated panel, it is protected from scratching, moisture, and everyday handling. With proper care, high-quality metal prints can maintain their vibrancy and structural integrity for decades.
Can metal prints be used outdoors?
Yes. Metal prints are one of the best options for bold, durable artwork in select outdoor environments. Their moisture resistance and rigid structure make them well suited for covered patios, porches, and sheltered exterior walls. Performance depends on direct sunlight exposure, temperature extremes, installation method, and finish choice. For best results, outdoor prints should be installed in areas with some protection from constant direct sun.
Do metal prints fade in sunlight?
High-quality metal prints produced with dye-sublimation on premium panels are highly resistant to fading. With proper care and placement away from prolonged direct sunlight, they can maintain their color and vibrancy for decades. Metal prints are rated for 65+ years of fade resistance under normal indoor display conditions.
Are metal prints waterproof?
Metal prints are highly moisture-resistant and can be cleaned with a soft damp cloth. They perform well in humid environments like bathrooms and kitchens. While they handle moisture far better than paper or canvas, prolonged submersion is not recommended.
What finish is best for metal prints?
Gloss finishes are ideal for vibrant photography with bold colors and strong contrast — they maximize visual impact. Matte or satin finishes work beautifully for softer imagery, black-and-white photography, and spaces with bright ambient lighting where you want to minimize reflections.
Gloss vs matte metal prints — what is the difference?
Gloss metal prints have a reflective surface that maximizes color saturation and creates a luminous, high-impact look. Matte metal prints reduce glare, offer a softer presentation, and work well in brightly lit spaces. Gloss is typically chosen for bold, colorful photography while matte suits black-and-white work and softer imagery.
What kinds of images look best on metal?
Metal prints are especially powerful for landscapes, aerial photography, desert scenes, seascapes, wildlife, automotive photography, architecture, abstract art, bold graphic artwork, and night photography. Any high-resolution image with strong color or contrast will look exceptional on metal. For a full breakdown by subject, see our Photographer's Guide to Metal Prints.
Are metal prints good for black-and-white photography?
Yes. Black-and-white photography can look outstanding on metal, especially when there is a strong tonal range with rich blacks and clean highlights. A matte or satin finish is often recommended for black-and-white work, though some photographers prefer gloss for high-contrast images where they want the blacks to feel especially deep. See more in our guide to photos that look best on metal.
Do metal prints need a frame?
No. Metal prints do not require a frame — they hang flush against the wall with a clean, contemporary look. Most metal prints come with a rear-mounted hanging system that creates a floating effect. Framing is optional and purely a matter of personal preference.
How do you clean a metal print?
Simply wipe the surface with a soft, damp microfiber cloth. For stubborn marks, a small amount of standard glass cleaner works well. Avoid abrasive materials or harsh chemicals. Metal prints are easy to maintain and keep looking pristine for years.
Canvas Prints
What is the difference between canvas and metal prints?
Canvas prints offer a softer, traditional gallery feel with visible texture and warmth. Metal prints deliver bold, vibrant color with a sleek modern presentation. Canvas is ideal for painterly or fine art aesthetics, while metal is preferred for photography and images that benefit from strong contrast and sharp detail.
Are canvas prints good for artwork?
Yes. Canvas prints are one of the most popular formats for displaying artwork. The textured surface adds warmth and depth, and the stretched gallery wrap creates a finished look without the need for a frame. Our canvas prints use archival inks on premium poly-cotton blend, hand-stretched on solid wood frames.
Do canvas prints come ready to hang?
Yes. All canvas prints from Pure Art Printer come stretched on a solid wood frame and ready to hang right out of the box. Hanging hardware is included with every canvas order.
Should canvas prints be framed?
Canvas prints look great on their own with a gallery-wrapped edge, but framing is an option for a more traditional or elevated presentation. We offer custom framing with a variety of moldings and styles to complement any canvas print.

Yes. We offer custom sizes on all of our print formats. Whether you need a standard dimension or something unique, we can produce it. Custom sizes are available to exact specifications.

File Preparation
What file resolution do I need?
We recommend 300 DPI at the intended print size for optimal quality. However, we can still achieve excellent results at 150 DPI or higher. We will review your file before printing and let you know if any adjustments are needed.
What file types should I upload?
We accept TIFF, JPEG, PNG, and PSD files. For best results, save your file in RGB color mode using the Adobe RGB (1998) color profile, and make sure to embed the profile when saving.
How do I know if my image is large enough?
Upload your file through our print builder and select your desired size — we will evaluate the file and notify you if the resolution is too low for that size. As a rule of thumb, multiply your desired dimensions in inches by 150 to find the minimum pixel count needed.
What color profile should I use?
We recommend Adobe RGB (1998) for the widest color gamut and most accurate reproduction. sRGB files are also accepted. When saving your file, make sure to embed the color profile so our systems can match your intended color accurately.
Can you print photos from a phone?
Yes, though quality depends on the phone model and image resolution. Modern smartphones capture images at resolutions suitable for many print sizes. Upload your file and we will let you know what sizes will produce the best results. For the sharpest prints at large sizes, we recommend using a dedicated camera. Visit our File Prep Guide for more details.

What mounting options are available for metal prints?
Metal prints come with a rear-mounted floating system that creates a clean, modern look on the wall. We also offer additional mounting and display options depending on size and preference. All prints arrive ready to hang.

If your print arrives damaged, contact us immediately with photos of the damage and packaging. We stand behind our work and will make it right.
How should I clean or care for my print?
